What is Your Art Ritual?

While reading The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp I was struck by her use of “Ritual” rather than “Habit” and it’s meaning has really resonated with me.

I think I say it all best in the video but, I will write it here anyways.

My daily art is integral to who I am, it is my identity. At this point it is even less of what I do and more of who I am as a person. Daily art is my repeated beingness. But, I would always call it a “Habit”, and it is, yet the word “Ritual” really brings it into a new, more sacred and spiritual domain where I think it fits best.

My daily art ritual is so important to me that it’s like a religion. Everything I do throughout the day is shaped to positively impact my art ritual. I exercise, I get quality sleep, I work hard on perfecting my nutrition, I nap, meditate, read, purchase, listen and all of it bends toward art in some way. It’s way beyond habit for me now, it’s a ritual.

What is your art ritual?

It doesn’t have to be art really. What are you so passionate about that it is as integral to your being as Kosher food is to Jewish practice?

How can you shift your mindset so that your passion is a sacred part of your life?

Pocahontas Drawing in Graphite

I only had about 10 minutes to sketch in the beginning of the Pocahontas drawing so it’s a bit rough right now. Tomorrow I will be refining and spending much more time on it, focusing on accuracy.

One Minute Gestures

One minute gestures exercise again from the The Natural Way to Draw book and today the first few pages were done on rough newsprint before moving back to smooth newsprint. I had a few sheets of rough newsprint left on my board so I finished them off. I’m still loving my super cheap smooth newsprint much more.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!

Great focus all morning and I’m loving my video I recorded on art rituals. After only the first 20 pages of The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp I’m already feeling grateful for the book and changing for the better.

What needs work? What did you learn?

I put in some great deep work time at work today but I think I can increase that a bit more. Close to the end I was very distracted.

How am I going to Optimize moving forward?

Train my focus! Start with smaller time increments, break between each then increase over time.
