Trees: Losing Interest

There always seems to be a point in a paintings life when I start losing interest.

I’m not sure if it is because I’m so far from finishing this painting that I’m not interested in continuing or if it is at that awkward not done stage that I can’t see if it will turn out well. So, I’m debating if I should continue with this painting or put it down and start another secondary painting. Maybe a painting that is not so detailed for gouache.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just feeling lazy. Or maybe I just don’t have a clear goal in mind for this painting. I may try creating a goal for this painting, something to work towards that will inspire me to continue. For now though, I think my next session will be back to my living room painting.

  1. Yeah, I have this same feeling sometimes. It’s when you know there’s a long slog ahead and you don’t know if it’s worth it, and maybe there’s some things that aren’t quite working and I don’t know how to fix them.

    You subject is interesting and the shadows are already working. The tangle of branches should pull it off nicely.

    You could take a break, and mix things up by doing a simpler painting. But sometimes when I put something aside I never go back to it.

  2. I feel this way when I’m almost finished with a story. I hate rewrites, edits, and revision.
    I look at this and I feel you aren’t as into this painting. Maybe it’s the exact opposite from my challenge. You drag your brush trying to get the painting going, I drag my pen towards the end. You seem more into the Living Room painting right now. Maybe because it’s got substance to it now and you are working on the little details.
