I get so caught up in trying to match value, color, drawing and edges that I forget that I should be also thinking about structure.

I like how this painting is progressing but when I look at the head I want to feel the skull beneath the skin and currently I don’t get that feeling. The hard question now is, “How?”.

My only conclusion so far is to keep thinking about structure while I paint. While I’m painting the beard on the chin I need to think of the sharp angles created by the mandible. When I paint a nose I need to think about where the actual bone ends and the cartilage begins. Maybe then I will force some structure into this. As it stand now, the painting looks good but it is more a facade than a figure.

I am an Artist and a programmer currently living in the amazing state of Washington. I have a passion for art, but I'm stubborn as hell with it. My day is complete only when I do some piece of art each day, no matter how small. "There was a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile."
