I Finished The Satsuma Painting
I was able to end up with a very productive art day today despite all the errands I had to run. Plus I finished the satsuma painting.
Another Productive Day
I’m little pressed for time on today’s post so I’m going to keep it short and just chat about another productive day.
An Abundance of Energy
I have an abundance of energy today due to some amazing sleep efficiency so I poured all that energy into creative work, loving every minute of it.
The Art Marathon Has Begun
I’m off work all next week so I’ve decided to have an art marathon where I try and get in as much art making and creative work as I can every day.
More Still Life Oil Painting Work
I’ve had a wonderful morning of art before I started my “real job” where I added in more still life oil painting work.
Forgotten Nuances in Oil Painting
After a couple hours of painting today I realized that I’ve forgotten all kinds of nuances in oil painting. Luckily the intricacies of working oil is coming back quickly.
My First Oil Painting in Months
Even though my sleep wasn’t the greatest last night I woke up with a ton of energy and was able to begin a new oil painting. My first oil painting in months.
Still Life for Demo 2
The still life I did yesterday didn’t have the impact that I wanted to achieve. I wanted something to entice people to the demo.
Kidney Transplant: Apt Day 9
I’m having a lot of fun drawing this stuff just sitting on our counter, there are all kinds of details to get lost in.
Kidney Transplant: Apt Day 6
I’m drawing all the stuff that has collected on our kitchen counter, and just in ink.
Kidney Transplant: Apt Day 4
I wonderful friend of mine visited me in the hospital and gave me this watercolor sketch book with watercolors.
Kidney Transplant: Apt Day 2
This apartment we are staying in is fully furnished with items like this fake flower to draw.
Kidney Transplant: Hotel Day 4
We are still at the hotel and I drew a figure on my phone on my bed.
Kidney Transplant: Hospital Day 3
My third day in the hospital and I’m drawing my water container.
Kidney Transplant Day
I’m up at 3am, I need to get a drawing in before we drive to the hospital by 5am.
Business Trip: Day 3
I was tired of drawing the boring lamps so I drew the soaps in my bathroom.
Business Trip: Day 2
Drawing another lamp in this hotel, but the lamps are quite boring this time.
Post Surgery Gouache
After a long day at the hospital I’m doing the bare minimum in painting tonight.
Lemon Still Life: Awkward Blockin
When blocking in large areas of a painting it always seems to get awkward.
Lemon Still Life
After a very busy day and a trip to the hospital, I’m switching over to gouache in preparation for this weekend.
Satsuma Still Life Finished
I could have spent another hour on this still life but I’m anxious to start on my next big painting.
The Difference of Focus
Tonight I was able to really focus on what I was doing and you can tell the difference.
Finished One Started Another
I finished the very last part of the “Me and Kiddie” painting and started on a still life painting.
Egg Tempera Test
I’ve always been highly influenced by Andre Wyeth and today I’m doing a test of egg tempera, Wyeth’s preferred medium.
Still Life Test
It has been a long time since I’ve done a still life and wow I’ve lost some skills here.
Hospital Drawing
So I spent the night and a day in the hospital. Of course I brought my sketchbook, because it was a very long day.
Still Life Test
It has been a while since I’ve done a still life and today it showed. But in my defense this was just a still life test.
Debate Sketch
If you are like most people in America you’re at least mildly frustrated about our upcoming election. Well, I have discovered a great way to watch election coverage without all the frustration, it is called debate sketch.
Complex Ball Gouache Painting: Session 3
So I finally finished up this small painting of the complex ball in gouache and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Complex Ball Gouache Painting: Session 2
Wow, another busy day for me. Before I know it the day is almost gone and I have to get some art time in. I wasn’t able to start on this ball gouache painting until late so I wasn’t able to spend much time on it before bed.
Complex Ball Gouache Painting: Session 1
In the zone today, I was taking my time and drawing this interesting and complex still life piece. I have painted this ball at least once before and each time it has been challenging. To finish this complex ball gouache painting it’s going to take several sessions, but I will take my time and do my best.
Orange Painting in Gouache
I tried a different setup today for painting this simple orange and I think I liked it better.
Apple Painting in Gouache
I’m happy with how this painting turned out. Finally an apple painting in gouache that I can be proud of.
Life Drawing and Another Gouache Apple
You know what… it’s easy to show only your best work all the time.
Life Drawing and Apple Test
I’m testing out my skill with gouache on a very simple subject. I always think this is easier than it turns out, even with this simple apple I think I can learn a lot.
Skull Painting
I’m trying to get back up to speed with my sessions, so I’m going to focus more on getting artwork done than writing about it for the next few days. I expect the subsequent posts to be fairly short.
Skull Drawing Session 4, Finished
Yay!! Not only am I caught up with my daily posts with this post but I’ve also finished my skull drawing. I think I could have cut this down into two or maybe even one session but I do what I can do daily and that is what is important.
Skull Drawing Session 3
The third session on this skull drawing was kept short, I don’t think I was feeling well and I’m beginning to understand the importance of daily fitness along with my daily art.
Skull Drawing Session 2
Tonight is the second session of this skull drawing and I enter into a meditative state as I gradually work through all the small details in the skull.
I Borrowed Someones Skull
I have wanted to own a skull for a long time now but I haven’t really wanted to put down the money for it yet. Luckily Cary Jurriaans let me borrow one of her skulls from her studio so it’s time to put it to use.
Methodical Geranium
It seems that my painting process changes all the time. Maybe more often than it should. With tonights Methodical Geranium painting I think I was painting more like the Richard Schmid process, but with less of the amazing outcome.
Pink Geranium
Today I learned that some colors in nature are unreachable by my current palette. The super bright pink geranium flower ended up being a very difficult subject.
Smelly Daisies 3
Yes, I painted the daisies again. For this one I was focused on color. Well, I was also focused on drawing and value but the end goal was to get a more colorful look in these smelly daisies.
Smelly Daisies 2
The second time painting my smelly daisies went much better, I worked hard on this little painting and it paid off.
Smelly Daisies
I didn’t want to pay $10 for a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store because here on the island there are flowers blooming all over the place. I figured I could just walk to the corner and pick some nice flowers to paint, and that is what I did. Unfortunately I have inadvertently intercepted some pooches “pee-mail” so now I have a bunch of smelly daisies…
Flowers Are Hard To Paint
I was a bit distracted tonight so my painting session was short, only a half hour, but it took me much less time than that to exclaim during the painting “Flowers are hard to paint!”
Adrift, Soon To Be Erased
Tonight I was really out of sorts, I had no idea what to paint and I really didn’t have a lot of energy to do art. So with no direction, goal or idea I was adrift in my thoughts while I setup a random still life and painted it.
Two Oranges: Gouache
Maybe all artists have certain sensibilities for different medium and for each one you have to think and act in a different way. I may have finally come to this realization to day with my two oranges gouache painting.
Two Oranges
There is an interesting dichotomy that I think exists within most artists. We love to do art, but lots of times we just don’t feel like it. I’m not sure how we can love something yet not feel like doing it, but it happens. Luckily I know a cure… Wow, that sounded like a sales pitch… Ok, I don’t know a “cure” but I do know what works for me, and it may work for you.
