Back at it today with lots of time on painting, CreateQuest, Jansen and everything else.
Today I was effective in all creative areas but I also took some time for myself.
Another very productive day on this painting and everywhere else.
Half of my art session today was mixing paint but I got a lot done quickly.
Another super hot, productive and effective day.
Today was a super effective day in my AM and afternoon art session.
Moving forward on the paper cross painting in extreme heat.
Most of the session this morning was spent mixing new colors.
Lots of success today with the Paper Cross painting.
Moving forward on the Paper Cross painting armed with knowledge and a new color wheel.
Today I try to figure out if neutralizing a color with gray is better than with it’s complimentary.
Back to the color study with the Paper Cross painting and a dark to light approach.
Lots of testing today and recommitting to trying to get this painting finished.
Lots of color investigation and theory today!
I made a decision today to begin finishing some of these paintings that I have in progress.
I’ve been working three days on the same section of this painting and I’m not sure it’s getting better.
I made some positive progress on Paper Cross and worked on a figure study.
I may have destroyed this painting but failure is a great teacher.
I moved back to the paper cross for today’s session and decided to work on it differently.
I may be done with the Paper Chevron painting. I need to live with it for a while.
I’m so close to finishing this painting!
Three hours of art on Paper Chevron today was very productive.
I got a little bit more work done on the paper chevron today.
This may have been the most effective day I’ve had in weeks.
I’m really enjoying taking my time on this painting and getting all the subtle colors and value right.
I didn’t get the greatest sleep last night but I was able to get some art in.
Today I moved back to the Paper Chevron painting.
Its time to put this painting in the closet and let this layer dry for a while.
I’m almost positive that tomorrow I will finish the first stage of this painting.
I’m taking my time with the paper triangle values and making sure I get them close.
Another super productive day but I didn’t get those post out till the next day.
Today’s art session was very fun! I worked on Paper Triangle and began an illustration.
I’m gone far enough with this painting for now until it’s dry.
I’m continuing to refine all the values in this painting and the drawing.
Now I’m making great headway on this painting but I’m having to fix a lot of values.
The second session of Paper Cross was more troublesome than I expected.
This is the fourth in what may be a long going series of paper paintings.
The second day on the Paper Chevron painting was very productive.
I’ve started on my next paper painting and for now I’m calling it Paper Chevron.
Two days in a row and I’ve finished two paintings.
A great day of painting! I was able to spend all kinds of focused time.
Today I moved back to the Paper Flame painting and began glazing in color.
I spent lots of time painting today and taking this painting to the next stage.
Another very busy day but I was able to stick to my schedule and get some good art time in.
I had a super busy day today and was unable to spend as much time as I wanted painting.
The second day of glazing and this time I got the layer of color closer to what I want.
The first day of work employing what I’ve learned about glazing is a success!
I’ve finished this first stage of my paper flame painting and now put it away to dry.
After work today it’s nice sitting and calmly painting. It’s almost meditative.
I’ve moved back to my Paper Flame painting today as I’m waiting for the Knot painting to dry.
I finished up all the black and value work on Paper Star today and I figured I try adding the next step to some dry areas.
A wonderful morning of painting and conversation with a fellow creator on the journey to mastery.
Much more work time than art time today and I’m a bit frustrated.
I have a day off work today and a long hike planned so I’m making progress however small on this painting.
Day seven on this painting and I’ve pulled out the smaller brushes.
Sunday early morning painting and I’m wonder how smooth is smooth enough.
This morning as I continue with the Paper Star painting I’m contemplating changing the title of these paintings.
I moved back to the Paper Star and begin refining it’s edges today.
I spent a lot of time working on refining the subtle transitions of value with the paper folds today.
Time has been a scarce commodity these past few days but I still plan my art and execute when I can.
I had a super busy work day today and little time to work on this painting but I got some focused work in.
Because all of the other paintings are still wet I’ve started a fourth painting in tandem.
The first strokes of oil on my Paper Star painting and I’m figuring out the hue needed for an ethereal glow.
I started drawing and painting on the third painting that I will be working on in tandem with others.
I was able to end up with a very productive art day today despite all the errands I had to run. Plus I finished the satsuma painting.
I’m little pressed for time on today’s post so I’m going to keep it short and just chat about another productive day.
I have an abundance of energy today due to some amazing sleep efficiency so I poured all that energy into creative work, loving every minute of it.
I’m off work all next week so I’ve decided to have an art marathon where I try and get in as much art making and creative work as I can every day.
I’ve had a wonderful morning of art before I started my “real job” where I added in more still life oil painting work.
After a couple hours of painting today I realized that I’ve forgotten all kinds of nuances in oil painting. Luckily the intricacies of working oil is coming back quickly.
Even though my sleep wasn’t the greatest last night I woke up with a ton of energy and was able to begin a new oil painting. My first oil painting in months.
The still life I did yesterday didn’t have the impact that I wanted to achieve. I wanted something to entice people to the demo.
This is the stack of pills that I pull from daily.
I’m having a lot of fun drawing this stuff just sitting on our counter, there are all kinds of details to get lost in.
I’m drawing all the stuff that has collected on our kitchen counter, and just in ink.
I wonderful friend of mine visited me in the hospital and gave me this watercolor sketch book with watercolors.
This apartment we are staying in is fully furnished with items like this fake flower to draw.
We are still at the hotel and I drew a figure on my phone on my bed.
My third day in the hospital and I’m drawing my water container.
The transplant went well and I’m not dead! 🙂
I’m up at 3am, I need to get a drawing in before we drive to the hospital by 5am.
We’re at Lake Crescent Lodge on the Olympic Peninsula.
I was tired of drawing the boring lamps so I drew the soaps in my bathroom.
Drawing another lamp in this hotel, but the lamps are quite boring this time.
The first day of a business trip to Chicago and I’m drawing a lamp.
Yep, I’m still working on this still life…
After a long day at the hospital I’m doing the bare minimum in painting tonight.
When blocking in large areas of a painting it always seems to get awkward.
This is proof that I work better on a smoother surface.
After a very busy day and a trip to the hospital, I’m switching over to gouache in preparation for this weekend.
I could have spent another hour on this still life but I’m anxious to start on my next big painting.
Tonight I was able to really focus on what I was doing and you can tell the difference.
I finished the very last part of the “Me and Kiddie” painting and started on a still life painting.
I’ve always been highly influenced by Andre Wyeth and today I’m doing a test of egg tempera, Wyeth’s preferred medium.
It has been a long time since I’ve done a still life and wow I’ve lost some skills here.
So I spent the night and a day in the hospital. Of course I brought my sketchbook, because it was a very long day.
It has been a while since I’ve done a still life and today it showed. But in my defense this was just a still life test.
If you are like most people in America you’re at least mildly frustrated about our upcoming election. Well, I have discovered a great way to watch election coverage without all the frustration, it is called debate sketch.
So I finally finished up this small painting of the complex ball in gouache and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Wow, another busy day for me. Before I know it the day is almost gone and I have to get some art time in. I wasn’t able to start on this ball gouache painting until late so I wasn’t able to spend much time on it before bed.
In the zone today, I was taking my time and drawing this interesting and complex still life piece. I have painted this ball at least once before and each time it has been challenging. To finish this complex ball gouache painting it’s going to take several sessions, but I will take my time and do my best.
I tried a different setup today for painting this simple orange and I think I liked it better.
I’m happy with how this painting turned out. Finally an apple painting in gouache that I can be proud of.
You know what… it’s easy to show only your best work all the time.
I’m testing out my skill with gouache on a very simple subject. I always think this is easier than it turns out, even with this simple apple I think I can learn a lot.
I’m trying to get back up to speed with my sessions, so I’m going to focus more on getting artwork done than writing about it for the next few days. I expect the subsequent posts to be fairly short.
Yay!! Not only am I caught up with my daily posts with this post but I’ve also finished my skull drawing. I think I could have cut this down into two or maybe even one session but I do what I can do daily and that is what is important.
The third session on this skull drawing was kept short, I don’t think I was feeling well and I’m beginning to understand the importance of daily fitness along with my daily art.
Tonight is the second session of this skull drawing and I enter into a meditative state as I gradually work through all the small details in the skull.
I have wanted to own a skull for a long time now but I haven’t really wanted to put down the money for it yet. Luckily Cary Jurriaans let me borrow one of her skulls from her studio so it’s time to put it to use.
Today I learned that some colors in nature are unreachable by my current palette. The super bright pink geranium flower ended up being a very difficult subject.
Yes, I painted the daisies again. For this one I was focused on color. Well, I was also focused on drawing and value but the end goal was to get a more colorful look in these smelly daisies.
The second time painting my smelly daisies went much better, I worked hard on this little painting and it paid off.
I didn’t want to pay $10 for a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store because here on the island there are flowers blooming all over the place. I figured I could just walk to the corner and pick some nice flowers to paint, and that is what I did. Unfortunately I have inadvertently intercepted some pooches “pee-mail” so now I have a bunch of smelly daisies…
I was a bit distracted tonight so my painting session was short, only a half hour, but it took me much less time than that to exclaim during the painting “Flowers are hard to paint!”
Tonight I was really out of sorts, I had no idea what to paint and I really didn’t have a lot of energy to do art. So with no direction, goal or idea I was adrift in my thoughts while I setup a random still life and painted it.
Maybe all artists have certain sensibilities for different medium and for each one you have to think and act in a different way. I may have finally come to this realization to day with my two oranges gouache painting.
There is an interesting dichotomy that I think exists within most artists. We love to do art, but lots of times we just don’t feel like it. I’m not sure how we can love something yet not feel like doing it, but it happens. Luckily I know a cure… Wow, that sounded like a sales pitch… Ok, I don’t know a “cure” but I do know what works for me, and it may work for you.
After the short art session last night I was determined to get some real time in today. After quite a bit of time coming up with an interesting composition I ended up with a painting that I’m happy with called “Hatched”.
