And absolutely wonderful morning of both traditional and digital study.
Back to traditional media and working on some more texture exercises.
I finished my inking texture practice from draw a box and played around with a digital portrait as well.
Studying a portrait and how to break it down into basic light and dark and still make it read.
Back to studying the figure in basic shapes. I’m prepping for a possible painting.
Study of this landscape in gouache and digital and trying to get it to read well.
Another day all on digital as I try to get my schedule under control.
I spent a long time trying to get all the shapes in this painting to read well.
Today, the same as yesterday but with oil paint instead of charcoal.
I’m going back to studying. I can’t deny that I lack a lot of training in composition and shape design.
The more I work on this painting the more I feel as if I don’t know what I’m doing.
I felt like I may have destroyed this painting after the session but as I edit the image… It’s not so bad.
I spent more time refining the drawing and defining some idea of shadow shapes before starting painting.
I’m so happy with the study of this painting that I’ve taken it straight to the larger canvas.
My problem is that I start new paintings without focusing deeply on motive first.
I’m on to a new painting after painting over the last two. This is taking my art into a brand new direction.
The Pear Tree is finished! If I didn’t start this painting over it would have taken 13 sessions less. But I learned a ton!
The shirt is moving fast I expect to finish this painting tomorrow. I haven’t had this many sessions on one painting in a long while.
Yes! I’m not sure what this technique is called but I like leaving the strokes bare, separate, no smoothing.
The more I try to smooth out the skin the less I like it. I’m going to keep it like it is.
One hour of painting this morning and and bringing the face up to where I want it.
I’m spending more time on web development for my site right now so this painting will go a bit slower.
I’m done with the background! Yay! I may change it a bit but for now back to the portrait.
Back to The Pear Tree and I’m still working on all the leaves for the tree.
This awkward looking painting is going to dry for a week before I fix it.
I covered a lot of canvas with paint today and tomorrow I’ll have fun with the light side of the face.
I only had time this morning to establish the shadow side of the face.
When I finish a painting I start a new one. I love to transition between them every 5 or so days.
This painting is just not working, I’m experimenting too much. Time to start over.
I Ended up wiping out everything I did yesterday and taking my time today with some success.
This painting is challenging. With such high chroma I’m struggling to get values right.
It’s been a long and exciting journey with this painting. I learned a ton!
I’m so close to finishing this painting. I’m almost certain to finish it tomorrow.
Back to 1853 and I was able to finish his left arm and leg.
Another session down. Still working on the leaves of the pear tree and still having fun.
I hope to finish the background on the next session. Then I’ll move on to the next painting for a few days.
At this point I thought I would be getting tired of all the leaves but I’m actually enjoying it.
Dealing with a few distractions this morning so my progress was as great at yesterday.
The right side of the background is done. Two more good sessions and I can finish it.
More time on the background and I’m changing my mind on painting landscapes… maybe…
I’ve got a good method going for the background now it’s time to repeat.
First layer of the skin is done and I’m moving to the block-in of the background.
This layer is done. Now it goes on the shelf until it dries and I’m done with others.
Less time this morning painting than I would have liked but I moved the ball forward.
Lots of progress on this painting today. I hope to get this layer done within the next two days.
At this point I know that this is just the first of many layers of paint. The painting needs it.
I’m still working on the face and taking my time experimenting.
This painting is going to be very challenging with all the super high chroma colors.
I started a new painting because 3 paintings going at the same time work well for me.
It’s time to let this painting dry for another week or so while I move on to the next.
I’m working on the arms and legs now, struggling to fix the bad values on my block-in.
I’m done with this layer on the shirt. Next session I move to his arms.
I was hoping to finish this painting without another drying time but the pattern on the shirt needs it.
I’m working my way across the shirt with a different set of brushwork than the body.
I moved back to this portrait to finish it while The Pear Tree dries.
Now it’s time to put this painting down and let the background and shirt dry.
This painting is coming together quickly.
I’m moving to the background now and the contrast is amazing!
Moving out from the face into all the hair this guy has.
Instead of a block-in I’m going straight for what I want and I’m loving it.
I refined the drawing today and barely got started painting when time was up.
I started over on The Pear Tree and used it for an easy session today and recovery.
I finished the background and it looks AMAZING!
Happy anniversary to me! 9 years straight and I’m going stronger than ever before.
The portrait is looking much better after some drawing corrections this morning.
I’m still working on the head because my AM art time as been cut a bit short. But my sleep is great!
I’m would love to have this painting done by the end of the month but I don’t think that is going to happen.
Only an hour of work today but I was able to get the right eye dialed in.
More distractions than I would like this morning but I was able to get a good hour in on this painting.
I finished this painting by 6am this morning and I’m very happy with it.
I’m so close to finishing this painting. I’m almost certain I will finish it tomorrow.
I’m moving quickly on this now and plan to finish it by Thursday.
I’ve started the final strokes on the figure and I’m loving it.
I finished the cloth and killed the background with a long session this morning.
Painting at 2am, and I’m tired of all the gray…
Even though my sleep is sub par I was able to achieve some great focus this morning.
Short session today. I’m spending time with our beloved kiddie for these last few days of his life.
Some sleep troubles last night but I still got a good hour of focus on this painting.
With some small changes this painting is finished! Two in one week!
I feel as though I can claim this painting as finished today but I’m going to give it one more session.
Back to this painting and I’m moving quickly. I hope to finish it this week.
I’m calling this painting finished but I still don’t have a name yet.
Moving much faster on this painting today. Loving it.
I’m finding my flow on this last layer and the painting is looking amazing!
I’m working on the final layer for this painting and can’t wait for it to be complete.
I’m very happy to say that this layer for this painting is done, now it dries for a week.
I wasn’t able to get into focus for my painting session today and it shows.
I killed it today with some super focus flow!
Happy New Year! I started it off great will lots of work on this painting.
I’ve got to get the drawing right on the shirt to capture his lean forward.
I’m taking the next couple days to work the drawing up with a bit more detail.
I moved my art time to earlier in the morning and it working out wonderfully.
I started painting purposely using very low chroma colors in preparation for many layers ahead.
I spent enough time today to refine the drawing and add a layer of clear medium.
It’s colder now so the painting is drying slowly and I need to put a new painting in the rotation.
I’m changing up how I do things a bit.
I moved back to the Veiled painting because Faded is dripping wet.
I started the next layer on this painting but it’s still wet!
I would have liked to call this done but I really needs another layer after it dries.
I’m almost positive that I will finish this layer next session.
I’m getting so close to finishing this layer of the painting, very exciting!
The more I work on this painting the more I love it.
I’m loving how the color and value transitions over the skin as it moves into shadow.
I’m trying a new medium today and it will either be awesome or kill this painting.
I’m moving down the painting refining, establishing chroma and form.
Back to curvature and I’m bringing the drawing and form back in line.
This layer of paint is done and I’m excited to start it again after it dries.
I’ve created a plan and changed direction on this painting. Exciting!
I’m moving back to this painting and I’m honestly now sure of where it’s going to go.
Great painting session but I’m having some trouble with the color of the body.
I moved forward quickly on the painting today but I think I need one more layer.
Today’s goals is to put the paint on as thick as I can and as accurate as I can.
I would like to carve out more time for painting but…
My goal today was to put the paint on thick but accurately.
Another small step towards a completed painting.
I’m playing between construction and deconstruction.
I’ve finished this stage of the painting. The next stage will start after it’s dry.
The more I work on this painting the more I like it.
I’m having a great time refining this painting and letting go.
