I don’t really care too much about the surface of the painting. Everything is intentionally left flat, my focus is on describing what I see.
It has taken me years to arrive at my current technique and most of my decisions came from my innate preferences. I don’t like filling the brush with a ton of paint. I like seeing layers of paint and translucent effects, depth. I prefer a synthetic mongoose brush. All of these preferences have lead me to use a very flat canvas with no texture and produce flat paintings. Maybe one day I will break away from it, I’m sure my preferences will change in the future. I wonder how my paintings will look 10 years in the future. Hopefully I look back on the work I’m doing now and muse at its ignorance, this would mean that I have grown.
