I didn’t have enough time to get deep into it but I’m focusing more on simplifying the head with this charcoal Black Panther drawing.
I felt that I went too much into the expressive side of things on the previous session and I lost most of the structure of the head along with accurate placement of the features. In response to that I erased as much as I can from the paper, printed out the image and began visualizing simple forms.
I also changed compared the drawing with the photo and made some adjustments to fix small placement issues. Hopefully I can get deeper into the structure of the head tomorrow.
The normal 15 minute warm-up in graphite.
Only a couple more sessions and I’ll be done with the exercises on drapery study from The Natural Way to Draw but I plan on focusing longer on drapery in the future. I feel as though I’m rushing these exercises.
I was listening to the Draftsmen YouTube video / podcast today on “how to learn composition” and Marshal Vandruff came up with some amazing inspiring artists to look at for composition.
Immediately I began downloading a bunch of images for all these artists and adding them to my growing collection of art inspiration. Here are some of my favorite.
Goya is a master of composition and etching!
Frank Brangwyn is simply amazing and I love his loose method and all his compositions.
I never knew about Gustave Doré before today but now he is one of my favorite artists.
Instead of doing a normal composition from memory today I decided to do some notan studies of a couple of these composition.
A short art day but it was full of inspiration and visual representations of simplifying the head.
Keep focused and don’t get too distracted by download all of the awesome art.
Next time I’ll write the names down and carve out some time to download and study.
