Showing Up

For some reason I didn’t have the greatest motivation for drawing this morning but I pride myself in turning pro and showing up Steven Pressfield style.

“What exactly are the qualities that define us as professionals?

We show up every day.

We show up no matter what.

We stay on the job all day.

We are committed over the long haul.

The stakes for us are high and real.

We accept remuneration for our labor.

We do not overidentify with our jobs.

We master the technique of our jobs.

We have a sense of humor about our jobs.

We receive praise or blame in the real world.”

Steven Pressfield from The War of Art

Stephen King basically says the same thing in his book On Writing. Professionals don’t wait for inspiration we show up every day and provide inspiration a conduit in which to move through us. Look at countless master creators and you will see they have one thing in common, they show up regardless of their feelings.

“Someone once asked Somerset Maugham if he wrote on a schedule or only when struck by inspiration. “I write only when inspiration strikes,” he replied. “Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o’clock sharp.””

More erasing than any drawing again today. I’m still trying to figure out her body shape under all the hair. For not it looks way too clunky and not as elegant as I would like. I’ll keep showing up and working on it.

One Minute Gestures

The one minute gestures again for the latest exercise from the The Natural Way to Draw book. Because my motivation was low I cut myself some slack and just did some casual drawing focusing on the head and torso mainly.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!

I showed up and got some art time in today. It’s a wonderful start to my day!

What needs work? What did you learn?

Cultivate my motivation.

How am I going to Optimize moving forward?

I think it’s time to checkout some great podcasts of other artists and YouTube videos. That always gets me motivated.
