Session #017, Work #016

I painted the orange for a second time. This is a fun subject, the bright colors make me crazy because now I want to try a flower.

Second time painting the orange. I really like this subject, maybe because its easy in some aspects but challenging in others, or maybe its just a nice bright color on gray background.

I’m not sure. I’m going to have to do this one again but try and generalize it down to just a few strokes. I think that would be very challenging yet teach me to look at the bigger shapes and to not get so caught up in the details.

My hierarchy of painting importance

  1. Drawing
  2. Value
  3. Edges
  4. Composition
  5. Color

Drawing

As always I trace the drawing and overlay that on the photo for comparison.

How can I improve the drawing

I didn’t even measure the bottom right edge of the board and you can tell. I also didn’t worry to much of where the line made by the white and gray terminus cuts through the orange. I should have measured the navel of the orange better also. There is just something about drawing that is a bit too tedious for me and I want to just get past it and into the good stuff. I need to work on that of course.

Value

How can I improve the values?

The cast shadow on the white board is a bit light. The turn of the shadow on the orange at the top right is not dark enough either. But the light side of the orange and everywhere else the values are perfect. I’m happy about that.
