Overview

The setup
The setup

I painted the Taiper for a second time. This time I split my canvas into 4 sections and painted it 4 different times. I wanted to make it smaller and force myself to focus on the bigger shapes and try not to get caught up in the details. That didn’t work too well, I still was focusing on the details a bit more than I wanted. But I’m happy how the painting turned out.

My hierarchy of painting importance

  1. Drawing
  2. Value
  3. Edges
  4. Composition
  5. Color

Drawing

All four drawings outlined and laid over the photo of the Taiper. See details below.

How can I improve the drawing

Same story as always here. Take more time focus more.

Drawing details

Drawing 1: A moderate amount of time and focus was spent on this drawing.

Drawing 2: A moderate amount of focus and time was spent on this drawing. As it was the second drawing I would have expected it to be better than the first, but it is not.

Drawing 3: I didn’t spend much time, nor did I focus much on this drawing. It was done without much care.

Drawing 4: I spent the most time on this drawing. Glad it is better than all the rest, but still there are more issues than I would like.

Value

I removed all the color for better comparison.

How can I improve the values?

After learning from the last painting and using this site and Photoshop  to inspect my values, I have improved them tremendously.

Edges

Not much focus on edges again.

Composition

I kept the composition simple and didn’t focus on it at all. The only thing I wanted to do was keep the entire figure in the painting.

Color

Not much of a focus on color here. I just recognized which areas were warm and which were cool and tried to keep them somewhat true.
