This painting has one goal and I make sure that everything I add to the painting is in service to that one goal.
I want to create emotional portraits. Not overly dramatic, but day to day subtle emotions that we all experience and see on our loved ones faces. An emotion that gets to the core of the person at this certain moment in time. While at the same time communicating a deeper understanding of who this person is. So when I paint a figurine, or a rock, or a fan or a box I ask myself if this is detracting from the original goal or helping it. If it detracts from the main goal I push it back or remove it. If it is an integral part of the message I accentuate it. In a single 1 hour session I can make a hundred of these decisions.
