I just spent a little time on painting the dishes today because I was putting many coats of gesso on a new painting.
I discovered several things while gessoing this new canvas.
- Un-stretched canvas has lots of waves in it and basically needs to be stretched to flatten out.
- It’s going to take a ton of coats of paint to get the surface smooth.
- I can’t begin painting on this canvas until after I have stretched it or I risk cracking the oil paint.
- My original idea of trying to avoid lots of space being taken up by my paintings is going to go down the drain really quickly if I move to larger works that require canvas.
So even though I didn’t get a lot of work done on Pattie’s painting and I wasn’t able to start on the drawing of the new painting yet, I learned a ton today and I find that awesome!
