Pattie: More Dishes

I just spent a little time on painting the dishes today because I was putting many coats of gesso on a new painting.

I discovered several things while gessoing this new canvas.

  1. Un-stretched canvas has lots of waves in it and basically needs to be stretched to flatten out.
  2. It’s going to take a ton of coats of paint to get the surface smooth.
  3. I can’t begin painting on this canvas until after I have stretched it or I risk cracking the oil paint.
  4. My original idea of trying to avoid lots of space being taken up by my paintings is going to go down the drain really quickly if I move to larger works that require canvas.

So even though I didn’t get a lot of work done on Pattie’s painting and I wasn’t able to start on the drawing of the new painting yet, I learned a ton today and I find that awesome!
