I want to take risks with this painting and experiment but after today’s session I learned that I need to at least have some direction for the experimentation.
I finished up the very basics of the drawing and felt like diving right into some acrylic painting but almost instantly I was having issues. I was applying the paint too thick and dark when one of the big aspects of this painting was layering and having lights shine trough the paint.
I learned a lot this session though. I learned what not to do next time which may be the best lesson. But I also found some interesting ways to work with acrylic and was amazed at how well it sticks to the canvas after it dries even though I scrubbed it with the brush just seconds after applying it.
I haven’t decided yet, but I’m thinking I will gesso over this and begin the drawing again, at least for the head.
