Open Studio with Gouache

I was having so much fun in gouache the past couple days that I decided to try it in the open studio session today.

I can’t remember the last time I used gouache to paint a figure, I’m sure I logged it somewhere on this site, but it has been a long time. From what I vaguely remember of my last attempts in painting the figure in gouache, they weren’t that good. But today was different and I’m guessing it was because of all the recent practice I’ve had with painting the figure in oil. It is nice to see that it translates to gouache well.

What went well?

I was able to establish a well drawn and painted figure in 3 hours with gouache.

What didn’t go so well?

I’m still struggling with some of the intricacies of gouache, such as color and value change when it dries.

What did I learn?

Practicing painting the figure seems to translate well between oil and gouache.

Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile."
