As I’m finishing up the drawing for this painting I was really amazed at the amount of distortion created by my cell phone.
I’ve known that cell phones distorted pictures somewhat but I didn’t think it would be this much. Here is a section of the photo I took, showing the background walls.

I know for a fact that I was holding the camera level and that the walls in Ann’s home are vertical. The distortion gets worse the further away from the center of the photo. See the wall on the right is almost vertical yet two and a half squares over the next wall is at an extreme angle.
This is easily to tell when the items in the photo are supposed to be straight but when dealing with very curvy lines of the figure it’s hard to tell that anything is distorted.

I corrected most of the distortion in my drawing but I’m going to have to go back over the entire drawing with a ruler to get my perspective correct. I still see some sloping that look unnatural.
I could have made the changes today but watching the eclipse took a lot of time out of my day.

Wow, I never realized that. good to know.
