I didn’t have much time for my Snape drawing today but I still feel accomplished after the art session with some simple planning.
To feel accomplished with every art session you have, even if you don’t have enough time, there are three easy steps.
Step 1: Recognize your current reality
We want to go into an art session knowing exactly what kind of time we have, what our environment is like, what our energy is like and what materials we have at hand. Basically know the reality around you.
If you have a super busy day and only 30 minutes to do a drawing or something and your waiting for a plane to fly home then this is not the time to plan on oil painting of a still life. But it is a great time to do a sketch of the people and interior around you for 30 minutes.
Regardless of how bad your current situation is, accept it. It’s your reality and complaining doesn’t solve anything. Accept what you have to work with then…
Step 2: Set Intentions
Okay, you know how much time you have, what materials you have to work with and where your energy level is at. Now we can set some intentions or goals based on that reality.
Write it down or say it in your head, or out loud, it doesn’t matter but make it specific. Make the commitment to what you CAN do right now with what you have.
The MOST important part is that you set an intention that you can accomplish with what you have. Then the hard part…
Step 3: Get to Work
You may have set intentions to do the work now or later but at least you have your plan. Now is the time to take ACTION! Execute your plan like a decisive general on a battlefield. Get focused and make it happen.
Once you’ve gone through all these three steps and have achieved the goal you’ve set I guarantee you that you will feel accomplished with every art session.
Fandom Fitness Drawing
I did the same thing with today’s session of work on Severus Snape. I only had an hour to work today so I accepted that and set some intentions that I knew would fit within that time frame.
Even though I didn’t bet a lot done on this drawing I still feel very accomplished today. I achieved something!

One Minute Gestures
Today’s exercise from the The Natural Way to Draw book is the 25 minutes of one minute gestures. I started these after my breakfast, I’m getting up later this week for sleep testing, and my focus after having a wonderful breakfast just wasn’t there. Next time I’m going to set some intentions to get my focus back.
What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!
I was able to feel accomplished with today’s art session by simply recognizing my reality, setting some intentions then executing that goal. Woot!
