I’m back to using DrawThis on YouTube but this time I’m using different materials.
I decided to use vine charcoal on canson paper for this session. I think it is the next logical step closer to drawing with oil paint.
It’s interesting, for these drawing I’m using a different approach than I would with the charcoal pencils (conte a paris). With the charcoal pencils my line work was more exact so I was able to play with how I put the lines down and add in some different line weights or subtle details quickly. With vine charcoal, even though I have it sharpened to a point, I need to use mostly straight lines to describe the figure. It’s not as dynamic as the charcoal pencils but I’m okay with that because most of my drawings were accurate.
But, I feel that even vine charcoal is much different than drawing with a brush in oil. I’m going to have to get some canvases ready and start doing some figure drawings with a brush. Oil painting is how I’m eventually going to use all these drawing skills and unfortunately the skills learned while drawing with charcoal does not translate well to drawing with a brush.
