Fundamentals: Lots of Drawing

I did a bunch of drawing tonight, some sitting and some standing with vine charcoal.

It was a good day for art as I was able to avoid the lure of the internet and draw for three hours after our workout. This drawing session was a bit more lose than the previous ones. I allowed myself to search for the accuracy of the line, moving from section to section. Although most of the drawings didn’t have a lot of rhythm I think the line work was better.

At some point I moved to a standing position and I held the charcoal pencil much like I would hold a brush. Then after a few drawings I switched to vine charcoal, still standing. Standing is much more difficult than sitting, having the board to rest your hand on while drawing really allows for better control of the materials. When I’m standing I’m finding it very hard to get the lines on the paper accurately, especially when I’m holding the pencil like a brush.

I wanted to simulate painting, after all the purpose for these fundamentals is to eventually work back into painting and we never hold a paint brush like a pencil. This is also why I was trying the vine charcoal for some of these drawings, it is a bit closer to painting than the charcoal pencils. Those last set of drawings look pretty terrible as I was struggling with the new standing position, vine charcoal and my legs were hurting. But I enjoyed the challenge.
