I decided to go for some oil painting today.
I ended up having to re-draw the figure a couple times before I got it the way I wanted it. I tried to keep the drawing as gestural as possible and keep that gesture throughout the painting. When I added color I tried to keep the mixtures simple I’m just using flake white, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red light, transparent oxide orange and alizarin crimson. Even though the photo had a lot of blues in it I didn’t add blue to my palette, this painting wasn’t about color.
Overall for a two hour painting I think it went well. If I spent a long while on this painting I could refine it to a point where I think I would be really happy but it would be nice to have the skill to arrive at a wonderful painting faster. I guess I’ll have to do many more of these sketches to improve.
