Fundamentals: Experimenting

Today I’m experimenting with materials and trying subtlety different ways to draw with vine charcoal.

I definitely don’t have as much control with vine charcoal as I do with the conte a paris charcoal pencils. I was trying to draw much the same as I would do with the pencils but it just wasn’t working with the vine charcoal. I ended up focusing heavily on getting the lines I put down accurate and keeping them mostly straight.

I was going to gesso some canvases and begin doing these drawing sessions in paint but I didn’t have enough time so I chose to use vine charcoal with a setup closer to painting by keeping my paper upright on the easel. Although I was still sitting.
