Figure Start: Not So Simple

I did a quick sketch of this figure yesterday and I figured I would continue with it in an oil painting. I was thinking it would be easy but soon figured out that it was not so simple to paint.

Most of the details of the figure are in shadow. This is why I thought it would be a quick and easy one. In most cases, it was easy, only a few complex shadow shapes. But, what I found hard was getting the turning of the form to look… un-labored… I’m not sure of a better word for it.

I think the only cure for it is to do these more.

My day is complete only when I do some piece of art each day, no matter how small. "There was a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish, it was so fragile."
