I just purchased a couple new ink pens because like any good artist I’m a bit obsessed with supplies. These new pens are Hybrid Technica by Pentel. I needed a couple for my upcoming trip because I expect that drawing with a pen will be my main source of art for the next three weeks so I better get something that I like.
I really wanted to test out the Hi-Tec-C pens by Pilot but I couldn’t find them anywhere in the stores around me, I guess I will just have to get a couple online and see if they are as good as I’ve heard.
My normal warmup page here and while testing the new pens I discovered that the ink doesn’t dry instantly. While doing most of my dexterity exercises I would smear some of the lines with my hand. The smearing isn’t too bad and it can be avoided. But, on a good note I was really happy with how well I pulled almost all of my ellipses.
I have drawn and painted this fairy many times in the past but I think this is the first time I have drawn it with a pen.
My new pens consisted of two different weights a 06 and a 04. I used the 04 for the face to keep the line weight very small in the shading and I used the 06 for the heavier work. Although while I was working I really couldn’t tell much difference between the two.
I tried to make my preliminary lines small and light because I do need some preliminary drawing still. Unfortunately some of these lines became very distracting and marred the subsequent better drawing. The idea of using pens for drawing is to get right to the point and train myself for the utmost accuracy. You really can’t do many haphazard lines with a pen, its either you put it down correctly the first time or not at all.
