Daily Art #3041

I started a session today by correcting the drawing a bit as compared to Photoshop.

I was very happy that my drawing wasn’t that far off from the photograph.

Before I started painting I laid out my palette with a very high key set of colors and then I mixed a series of steps all the way from white to my darkest dark. I started with a shadows first on the painting but soon realized that the darkest dark that I mixed was not quite dark enough to separate it fully from the light areas. I needed something a bit more darker for the shadow areas and to turn the form. So I opened up the value range just a little bit more.

I’m finding that my brain is constantly complaining of all the colors and values that I’m putting down because I’m trying to put down colors and values that are completely different from what I see on the canvas.

The only problem that I see right now, after an hour and a half into this painting, is that I’m simplifying that range with a simple gradient of one hue from white to a transparent orange without much variation.

Next time I may want to try introducing some other intense colors like cadmium red or cadmium yellow and maybe a cobalt or manganese blue
