Buffy Drawing Finished

With boundless energy this morning I put in lots of deep focus and got the Buffy drawing finished.

In the video I talk about the technique I use for burnishing graphite into the paper to make the background effect. So checkout the video for visuals, but here are the basics.

Whenever you sharpen your graphite pencils have a small container to capture the shavings. Make sure not to capture any of the wood though.

Then you can use the graphite dust with a chamois to rub the graphite into the paper evenly. Then you can use a knead-able eraser to pull out effects like I have. Or you can use the tone as a start for a drawing and use a “pick out” technique.

I’m really happy with how Buffy turned out. At first I wasn’t sure if the background effect would work. As a test I worked it up in Photoshop first and recognized that it was instantly better.

The most important thing here is that I was trying something new. Pushing outside of my comfort zone and being creative. It is only in this mode that we can truly move forward and discover possibilities that we’ve never dreamed possible.

5 Minute Gestures

Today’s exercise from the The Natural Way to Draw book was supposed to be 15 minutes of one minute gestures but I like doing the 5 minute studies so I traded it out and had fun. Thank you New Masters Academy for amazing figure images.
