Another sketch of Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh plus I recorded this one. I can’t do it often because the file size is huge but it’s nice to see the process played out in time lapse.
I’ve changed my background from a flat gray to a warm paper texture. I may neutralize it a bit more.
In an attempt to speed up my 100 heads challenge I’m drawing and only working with value.
I would have like to work longer on this painting but I just don’t have enough time in the morning at the moment. Making slow progress on my 100 head challenge. I may need to simplify my approach but I’m having a lot of fun.
One of my favorite stills from the movie At Eternity’s Gate because of the complementary colors used and high contrast. I was able to get a good block-in done this morning.
I find this method very successful for starting a painting. I don’t feel I need to take this painting to a finish Its purpose was just to establish a beginning method. The next step will be to establish methods for checking my drawing while painting more frequently.
I’m trying the same method as the last painting to see if I can repeat the quality.
THIS is the way that I prefer to paint. Lots of movement and full of life but built on a solid foundation. I had a ton of fun with this painting and with digital I’m able to go much faster than with oil. I don’t consider this a finished painting but a great block in for refinement.
I’m building the head with the method laid out by Marco Bucci and I realized I really don’t like painting this way. It feels lifeless. I need the act of painting to be energetic and full of movement. But, I also want it build on a sound structure. I’ll redo this head the way I want tomorrow.
After more study of values on the Asaro head with Marco Bucci I did another painting of a still from the At Eternity’s Gate movie. I’m not going for accuracy for these paintings. My focus is on mood and expressing myself.
Back to understanding the head with Marco Bucci. With a focus on value. I feel I already know value well but constant review will keep my skills sharp and it’s good to see how another artist deals with the complexity of value.
I spent about an hour on this painting having fun with texture and color. It’s a great foundation for a longer painting but I don’t feel like taking it further.
Continuing with scenes from At Eternity’s Gate I drew this one in black and white as I feel it expresses the inner turmoil better for Van Gogh.
I started the 100 heads challenge over again. We watched At Eternity’s Gate last night and it reminded me of how much I love painting and getting lost in the fever of it..
I did my warmup early in the morning but didn’t draw a head till later. My focus was gone by then and it didn’t work out so well.
I feel that this is enough for the study of the construction of the eye. I will be doing a 100 head challenge and more practice will happen there.
I finished the tutorial video on the eye by Marco and did a couple drawings from photos.
The construction of the eye and the eye socket is much more advanced than any other part of the head I’ve studied so far.
Continuing on more construction study of the eye.
Finishing up more construction of the ear and moving on to the eye.
I spent most of the day working on my website then I spent some time studying the construction of the hear.
I finished my study page of the structure of the mouth but this will not be the last time I study this area of the head.
Marco Bucci was correct in that the mouth is very complex. It’s going to take much more practice for me to be able to construct it well.
Lots of time watching and taking notes on constructing the mouth and a little bit of drawing the mouth.
Finishing up my study of the structure of the nose.
Moving on to the study of the nose. Wow, I didn’t realize that the planes of the nose could be so complex.
Finishing up my study of the underside of the chin and I’m going to have fun today on my birthday.
Working on the underside of the chin again and lots of web work.
Working on the underside of the chin now and referencing the great Andrew Loomis head.
I think I’ve done enough studies of the chin. Moving on to the next lesson tomorrow.
I finished the cheek exercises and started the chin with the Marco Bucci understanding the head exercises.
Four head studies for cheek construction then I had to start work earlier than normal.
I finished more studies of the brow and cheeks then added in study of the jaw.
The best way to learn this stuff is to just do it. A lot!
More study on brow and cheek construction today plus collecting a ton of images.
Great sleep and a effective AM. I’m getting back on track and I’m ready for the long weekend.
The same as yesterday. So far we’ve lost 4 of the 7 kittens…
The day was a whirlwind of task switching and emotional roller coasters but, I got my art done.
Super crazy at work again plus rushing a kitten to the emergency room.
My days have gotten extra super crazy with very sick kittens and lots of priorities at work.
On to term 2 of The Solo Artist Curriculum. I’m excited to be studying the head and doing a 100 head challenge!
I’ve finished the Figure Drawing Fundamentals course at Proko.com but I will keep using what I learned for everything in the future.
Exaggerating the figure into a new pose is so difficult that it took me an hour on this one.
Today was a lot of note taking and some challenging thinking with a bit of drawing.
With these two figures done I’ve finished up the structure part of the Proko fundamentals course.
Regardless of what how life tries to take all my time away from my creativity I’m still showing up and moving forward.
I’m working hard to get my website to a point where I can open it up again. Today I created two essential videos.
If I was able to be as productive every day as I was today I would reach all my dreams in 5 years.
I’m ready for the weekend when I can put in a ton of time on website work and art.
I love my super early AM drawing sessions. I’m not completing a ton of work right now but 1.5 hours of figure study is awesome.
My morning art routine guarantees that I’ve made progress on art regardless of how crazy the rest of the day is.
I had a crazy day but a wonderful day as well. Less art time then I would like but lots of wonderful conversations and kittens!
Basically I repeat of yesterday but with adding work into the mix. Some Proko and lots of web work.
Some drawing with Proko this morning and then lots of work on my website.
I’m having a lot of fun working with Proko.com and deconstructing the figure.
Up early again and working hard to organize everything I’m doing for the rest of the year.
I was up at 12:30 am because my brain would not go to sleep. So I started my day super early. Of course I’m a zombie now.
Today my brain just didn’t want to kick in gear so I took the day to have fun with art and took it easy.
The lack of sleep has caught up with me so I’m going to prioritize recovery today with art.
I was up at 2:30 am this morning working on art and I was loving it.
Art done, apartment cleaned and new business strategies started.
I had a wonderful day of AM art, business meeting and lots of web work.
Work took up most of my time today but I was able to start super early and get my art done.
I spent way too much time working on my website today and not enough on art stuff.
I spent a lot of time on art in the morning and some time on a new design for my site.
Today was a crazy and very unorganized day for me. But I was able to accomplish some things.
A wonderful morning of art time and a hike with Pattie the rest of the day. I’m ready for the week!
Super awesome full day of art!
What a wonderful day of art and connecting with other artists!
I’m having trouble being patient with my lack of production. I’m learning a ton but not completing finished work.
Today was a tough day but I was able to get some art done with little sleep.
I had a wonderful AM session with the beach composition I’m working on. Very challenging!
Today I painted in oil for the first time in weeks.
Lots of art work today as I was focused with my time and planned my day well.
Nothing but art all day.
I’ve moved from Photoshop to Krita and so far I’m loving it.
I had a very productive morning then later in the day I lost steam.
I absolutely love my new painting process docuemnt.
More iterations for the solo artist curriculum and I’m working my painting process document for the first time.
I spent more time setting up my new pen display than I did drawing today but it’s necessary.
I finished my first illustration today!
An absolutely fantastic Sunday full of effective production!
I started the last phase of my SVS illustration today and spent the rest of the day with Pattie.
I didn’t do the movie thumbs this morning so I could work on the illustration longer.
I’m still working on this illustration and it’s really challenging.
I wasn’t able to spend near as much time on art that I would have liked today.
I was able to spend 3 hours today pushing the ball forward on my art projects. Yay!
Lots of digital thumbnails today and planning my first illustration assignment.
I spent most of my morning comparing pen displays and less time drawing. Then a wonderful hike with some drawing.
Working on the first SVS assignment and having fun with movie thumbs.
I went through all the design elements defined by SVS and studied how N.C. Wyeth used them.
I began working on a study of one of my most favorite N.C. Whyeth paintings. The Passing of Robin Hood
I took a lot of notes from the Creative Composition course about unity, then completed one exercise.
Tuesdays are full of wonderful meetings with other artists so I got to wake-up super early for my art.
Super busy day but I was able to get some SVS exercises done and some thumb-nailing.
I’ve started the month with one of my most productive days in a long time.
A fantastic day of digital drawing exercises, meeting with Josh and video production.
Boxes and cylinders, video production with figure drawing and some digital in the evening. Wonderful art Day!
Reviewing my perspective notes, drawing 50 boxes, creating brushes and studying values.
This was not a solo artist curriculum day but I was trying to use what I’ve learned so far in life drawing.
A repeat from yesterday and some pivotal moments in my understanding of perspective.
Perspective study in the AM and some digital figure drawing in the PM.
More perspective study with Marshal Vandruff and getting closer to a possible landscape painting.
I’m going through the Marshall Vandruff perspective series and it’s absolutely fantastic.
Balancing tons of work time and daily art is becoming more difficult. My morning art ritual is now sacred to me.
A full day of art making and watching amazing interviews from Schoolism.com.
Even after a great morning today ended up as a low energy day, but I was still able to get some drawing done.
Plant construction study and the beginning of a digital study of an Albert Bierstadt painting.
Starting on Lesson 3 of drawabox.com and doing a study of a spectacular digital painting.
More practice with form intersections then moving on to organic intersections.
Still working on the form intersections and I’m stretching my mind to the three dimentions.
I’m working my brain super hard on these form intersection exercises. Super hard!
And absolutely wonderful morning of both traditional and digital study.
