4138: The Gap Day 3

It has become increasingly apparent to me that I need to continue training my skills while I work on these bigger paintings. I feel like that as long as I’m given enough time on a painting, I’m able to create something that looks good, but I want to increase my skill so much that I don’t have to rely on this tremendous amount of time in order to make a good painting. I’ve skipped over a lot of training in favor of tools like a grid system that will help me get a drawing done faster, but has severely undermined a fluid and intuitive approach to painting.

This is part of the reason why I decided to change the figure in this painting because the figure that was there was not drawn well and I wanted to start over with a better foundation. Unfortunately, I don’t think this new figure is drawn much better. But it is aligning with an additional direction that I want to add to my artwork or my daily practice, which is daily training with figure drawing and figure painting. I don’t know what it’s going to look like yet, but I want to create a curriculum for myself so I can improve my drawing and painting skills while I create these larger works. Hopefully if all goes well, maybe I can get a mentor at one of the schools that I would love to attend to.. fingers crossed
