3350: Schoolism Study 5

I spent a long time trying to get all the shapes in this painting to read well.

This was such a wonderful exercise. I first painted this and it wasn’t reading well at all. But Crag Mullins says.

“If something isn’t working. 9 time out of 10 it’s either the forms or perspective is not clear in your head. If you do not understand form and perspective then you cannot make clear shapes and your structure will fall apart. Once you understand these fundamentals then you can apply the rest in very creative ways.”

I didn’t understand the forms or perspective of the rocks in the foreground. I was also copying from nature which wasn’t presenting any understandable shapes. I changed it to improve the study.

Drawing exactly what you see is a whole bunch easier than trying hard to understand the entire form and how it exists in real space AND the perspective you’re seeing it from. Doing this brings in a whole new level of understanding.
