More color testing in preparation for a new painting. Time consuming but I’m learning a ton.
When comparing my mixtures with Sarazhin’s painting I noticed that he doesn’t mix a lot of these colors. There is a blue over the arm that is not mixed with a yellow. If it was mixed it would be green.
The more that I look at this painting, the more that I see that all the colors he’s placing are pure and not mixed on the canvas. And not mixed very much within themselves either. There’s a clear definition between most of the hues.
Back to my neutral tests…
As far as the color mixtures for manganese blue hue. I noticed that almost all of the mixtures are very low chroma and of low value. It seems like this hue wants to be dull. Unless mixed with a super high chroma color. Honestly after doing this test I’m not sure I want to use this color on the painting now.
I’m going to continue on with some more color test with cadmium yellow medium but I really feel like true understanding will come from doing some color key painting tests.
One thing I’m doing while making these mixtures is trying to make the original color as prominent in the mixture as possible. That’s not so easy when you have a color like phthalo blue which has a tremendously high tenting strength against anything else.
The mixtures that I created using cadmium yellow medium are much more harmonious than the other two. I think this has to do with me getting a bit better at the mixtures and making sure that each mixture is predominantly closer to the original color.
The hardest question today however is what colors do I choose for this painting.
Again, I think the true answer to that will be after a few color key studies. I’m going to get a canvas ready for that and start it tomorrow. Through that practice I may learn the most.

What went well, what was awesome! Celebrate It!
Very effective day!
What needs work? What did you learn?
I could plan our berry picking time better.
How am I going to Optimize moving forward?
Nope. It was a lot of fun even though I’m rushed to get things done before bed.
