3076: Paper Cross Finished

Another super hot, productive and effective day.

Today I began on the paper cross painting by oiling out some of the dark areas in the painting that had dried to a matte finish.

I realized that some passages of very dark hues that use clove oil to stay wet longer look as if they have dried. But in fact they are still wet. This is a problem because I have wet paint that has a matte finish making the value and color hard to figure out. The only way to fix that was to oil it out with medium over it, but while it’s wet I can’t do that.

This is another reason to stay away from adding clove oil to my paints as much as possible.

While painting I realized that I almost never have trouble reaching my darkest darks. What I have trouble with is encroaching too far into the lightest area and using my lightest value too early. I need to work on keeping my values lower in the lighter areas and compressing that range a bit so that I can use my brightest lights wisely.
